The ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic representing “Eternal Life". The ankh appears in hand or in proximity of almost every deity in the Egyptian pantheon (including Pharaohs). It signified wisdom and insight on the highest level and it was also a fertility symbol.
The ankh appears frequently in Egyptian tomb paintings and other art, often at the fingertips of a god or goddess in images that represent the deities of the afterlife conferring the gift of life on the dead person's mummy; this is thought to symbolize the act of conception.
As a symbol of fertility the loop represented the woman and the line below the man. This is man and woman in perfect union. By joining together man and woman in perfect harmony, new life is created. According to one of the theories regarding the origin of the ankh, the symbol might be representing Osiris and Isis, the cross and the oval, respectively. It was believed that the union of Osiris and Isis flooded the Nile every year and gave Egypt life by providing fertility.
